About the choir

First reliable records about the existence of a choir in Fano Cathedral date back to 1423: since then until XXth century, the Cathedral has had a constant presence of this musical instituion, which has taken care of musical service in city liturgies. Famous musicians were appointed as Director of Music, like Lodovico Grossi da Viadana, Paolo Benedetto Bellinzani, Vincenzo Rastelli, Giuseppe Ripini and Igino Tonelli, who was born in Fano. Very important was the role of Cathedral's choir during the cecilian reform of sacred music, wanted by Pope Pio X in 1903.
According the tradition, the choir sings today during solemn liturgies in the Cathedral and in other churches of the city.
The choir sings regularly every Sunday during Mass at 11.00 a.m.
The choir is also present every time the Bishop of Fano celebrates in the Cathedral on solemn days, or in particular occasions.
In major solemnities the choristers sing with adult singers during the Mass at 11.00 a.m.
Masses on Saturdays at 6.00 p.m. and on Sundays at 5.30 p.m. are sung by a guide singer with the organist.
Throughout the year, a series of concerts take place in the Cathedral, especially on major feasts (Christmas, Easter), when the choir sings music of various genre and style connected with liturgical context.
The choir is often requested to sing during important and solemn occasion, concerts and festival in other cities.
Every July, the Cathedral choir organizes a choir festival wich is named "I Suoni e la Parola" (Sounds and the Word).
From several years there's a partnership between Cathedral's choir and the Diocesan Institue of Sacred Music for which the choir sings as a workshop choir for students of choral conducting.
